Aloha, my name is Sophia

My journey as a photographer started from the inspiration I found in nature, philanthropy, and human connection. My husband, Jerad, and I founded our media company Picaflor Films in Maui, Hawaii, with the intention of providing cinematic video and photography. We fell in love with the simple island life, and we’re so grateful to be here. We have a 2 year old son, and raising a family here is pure magic. You can find us playing at the beach, going for a hike in the forest, or exploring outdoors.

My career got started after graduating from Brooks Institute with a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Journalism. I joined a non-profit as a photojournalist and traveled to many places including Central and South America, India, Indonesia, and Africa. This work was life changing for me, and I experienced a variety of cultures, vivid landscapes, and met the most beautiful people. They invited me with open hearts into their homes and shared their stories. I have always been fascinated with the journey of parenthood, and these experiences created the foundation to the way I approach photography.

Starting my own family has only strengthened my drive to help people memorialize their love for each other. Through my years as an artist, I’ve learned that photography is such an intimate connection. To capture powerful, beautiful, and authentic images doesn’t only require skill, but also presence and genuine care for the people I have the privilege of creating with.

About Picaflor Films

Jerad and Sophia are the founders of Picaflor Films - currently based Haiku, Maui, Hawaii. They've been creating together since meeting at Brooks Institute of documentary film and photography in 2013. The intention of this company is to highlight the nectar of life through positive, impactful, and cinematic storytelling. Focusing on projects that showcase social good, environmental solutions, healing modalities, revolutionary movements, transformational culture, and love stories is the mission. They produce all their projects in-house, from concept to completion, alongside their valued clients.

En español, picaflor means hummingbird. These animals were chosen as their brand totem, as a symbol of joy, happiness and love. They help awaken us to the beauty of the present moment. Always actively seeking the sweetest nectar, they remind us to forever seek out the good in life and the beauty in each day.

Picaflor Films is currently developing concepts for feature length documentaries, docu-series, and original content for their channel. They welcome collaboration opportunities, and partnership proposals. Thanks for learning more about us!
