Aloha, my name is Sophia

My journey as a photographer began with a deep appreciation for nature, human connection, and the power of storytelling. My husband, Jerad, and I founded Picaflor Films here on Maui almost 10 years ago, with the vision of creating cinematic photography and films that preserve life's most meaningful moments. We quickly fell in love with the island's slower pace and breathtaking beauty, and now we're grateful to call it home. Raising our two keiki here has been one of life's greatest gifts. You'll often find us at the beach, hiking through the forest, or simply soaking up the magic of the outdoors together.

My career began after earning a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Journalism from Brooks Institute. I went on to work as a photojournalist for a nonprofit organization, documenting stories throughout Central and South America, India, Indonesia, and Africa. Those experiences profoundly shaped both my life and my work. I was welcomed into people's homes, immersed in diverse cultures, and witnessed the beauty of everyday life across the world. It was there that I discovered my passion for documenting authentic human connection and the universal story of family.

Becoming a mother has deepened that passion in ways I never imagined. It has given me an even greater appreciation for how quickly life changes and how precious these fleeting seasons truly are. Whether I'm photographing a couple just beginning their journey together, an expectant mother, or a growing family, my goal is always the same: to create images that feel honest, emotional, and timeless.

I believe beautiful photography is about so much more than creating a perfect image. It comes from building trust, being fully present, and creating a space where you can simply be yourselves. My hope is that when you look back at your photographs years from now, you won't just remember how everything looked. You'll remember exactly how it felt.

About Picaflor Films

Jerad and Sophia are the founders of Picaflor Films - currently based Haiku, Maui, Hawaii. They've been creating together since meeting at Brooks Institute of documentary film and photography in 2013. The intention of this company is to highlight the nectar of life through positive, impactful, and cinematic storytelling. Focusing on projects that showcase social good, environmental solutions, healing modalities, revolutionary movements, transformational culture, and love stories is the mission. They produce all their projects in-house, from concept to completion, alongside their valued clients.

En español, picaflor means hummingbird. These animals were chosen as their brand totem, as a symbol of joy, happiness and love. They help awaken us to the beauty of the present moment. Always actively seeking the sweetest nectar, they remind us to forever seek out the good in life and the beauty in each day.

Picaflor Films is currently developing concepts for feature length documentaries, docu-series, and original content for their channel. They welcome collaboration opportunities, and partnership proposals. Thanks for learning more about us!
